2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI R-Line (Review)

The new sporty Touareg TDI R-Line is an upscale, 5-passenger midsize luxury SUV that is a spacious, powerful, fun to drive vehicle that embodies similar features of a Porsche Cayenne and an Audi Q5 due to the high performance diesel engine option, impeccable high-speed collectedness, and responsive steering.

2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI R-Line comes equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 clean diesel engine, 4MOTION all-wheel drive, 240 horsepower, 406 lb. ft. of torque, sport suspension, a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, and can haul up to 7,700 pounds.

The Touareg is available in four trims- Sport, R-Line, Lux, Executive and comes fitted with either a gasoline or clean-diesel engine.

The base Sport trim comes equipped with adaptive bi-xenon headlights, a power liftgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, 18-inch wheels, foglights, roof rails, cruise control, heated exterior mirrors, eight-way power front seats (with manual lumbar adjustment), heated front seats, LED running lights, premium vinyl leatherette upholstery, Bluetooth, iPod integration, a six-CD changer, audio connectivity, and an eight-speaker sound system, and satellite radio. An optional Navigation package can be added to the Sport trim and offers keyless entry/ignition, an intuitive navigation system, a rearview camera, and a hands-free power liftgate that can be opened by simply moving a foot below the rear bumper.

The Lux trim is fitted with the Navigation package and adds a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, driver memory functions, power rear-seat releases in the cargo area, front-seat power lumbar adjustment, and power-folding exterior mirrors.

The new mid-level R-Line has a more aggressive exterior and appearance and is distinguished by R-Line badges, front bumper fascia, side skirts, LED taillights, and rear oval-shaped dual exhaust tips. The R-Line does not come equipped with a hands-free liftgate, however, it adds LED taillights, 20-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and a sport body kit.  The R-Line also offers 12-way power, heatable front seats with driver memory, power liftgate, 40/20/40 split folding rear seat, rearview camera system, anti-theft alarm, rain sensing windshield wipers, dual zone climate control, push button start, a panoramic sunroof, leather seating surfaces, and a lot more.

The top of the line Executive trim comes equipped with all of the standard and Lux trim features, including a top-view parking display with four cameras, hands-free liftgate, better 20-inch wheels, a premium 10-speaker Dynaudio sound system, LED taillights, rear parking sensors, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

There is a Hybrid option and it is the most expensive Touareg. It is similar to the Executive trim and comes fitted with a supercharged 3.0-liter gasoline V6 engine matched with an electric motor. This special combination produces an astounding 380 horsepower, 428 lb-ft of torque, taking the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5.9 seconds.

The base gasoline V6 option yields approximately 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, the TDI V6 engine on the R-Line delivers 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, however the more expensive Hybrid trim only yields 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.  In terms of fuel economy, I think that the Touareg TDI R-Line is the best choice.

A rearview camera is standard on all Touareg models, except the base Sport and a top-view camera is standard only on the Executive and Hybrid models.

Standard safety features include- traction and electronic stability control, anti-lock disc brakes, hill hold assist, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags, 3 point safety belts, lower anchors and tethers for children, and rear door child safety locks.

The interior of the Touareg TDI R-Line is quite beautiful with wood accents throughout the dashboard and console areas with attractive R-Line badges on strategic parts of the interior.  In fact, the interior is just as fancy as other luxury SUV’s in its class with a regal and upscale feel to it and the dashboard as well as the console area are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The materials are high quality, the controls are easy to reach and are not cumbersome, and the touchscreen is large with an easy to use interface.  The front and rear cabin are quite spacious with ample room for larger and taller passengers with a versatile rear seat that can be reclined to offer additional space. I especially like the panoramic sunroof which adds more beauty and creates a more open and “airy” feel to the entire interior of the vehicle.

On the road, the Touareg TDI is a strong performer and even though the vehicle is large, it does not feel heavy or clunky. Steering is responsive and the vehicle handles sharp corners and rough road conditions with ease. On the highway, road noise is minimal and there is little to no “body roll” as so many other SUV’s tend to have, offering excellent stability on city streets and on freeways.

The 2014 Touareg TDI R-Line is beautiful SUV and has a starting MSRP of $57,615.  The Volkswagen Touareg is expensive, but it is a luxury vehicle available at a premium price for people desiring a high quality SUV with a unique design that is fun to drive with great features, incredible styling, powerful drivetrain, exquisite interior details, and excellent on the road performance that is better than most of its rivals.
